Population projections prepared for the National Pensions Review suggest that the population of people aged 65 years and older will increase from 463,774 to 1,105,044 by 2036. This represents a 138% increase in the number of older people over 65 over a 30-year period. The percentage of the total population comprising older people is also set to increase from 11% in 2006 to approx. 22% in 2036 and 29% in 2056.

The percentage of people aged 50 and over is expected to increase from 26% of the total population in 2006 (1,122,049) to approx. 43% in 2036 and 45% in 2041 (CSO 2006).

In the numbers of those aged 85 and over, there will be an even larger proportional increase – expected to reach almost seven-fold from 46,702 people in 2006 to 305,112 by 2056, according to figures prepared for the HSE.

The most notable increase among the age bands is the oldest age band of 85 years and over. The numbers in this age band are due to more than treble by 2036, according to figures prepared for the Department of Health and Children.
