Physical Activity & Sport

                Go For Life Logo

All adults – including older adults – need at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity 5 days a week. Go for Life is the national programme for sports and physical activity for older people in Ireland and we have lots of ways to help you to be more active.

If you are a member of a group you can take part in our Physical Activity Leaders (PALs) workshops which will give you the skills to lead regular activities. We have over 1,200 active PALs all over the country running sports and physical activity sessions among their own groups, helping the numbers who benefit from Go for Life to multiply rapidly.

Groups can also apply for Go for Life grants to support the work of PALs by buying equipment or trying out a new sport or activity. Last year we gave small grants to over 800 groups. More active groups can take part in the Go for Life Games – an annual celebration of physical activity and friendly inter-county competition.

If you are an individual who wants to be more active, we have information about what is available throughout Ireland and we also have lots of ideas about physical activities you can do safely in your own home. Contact us for a copy of our Get Active DVD which takes you through six physical activity sessions and our factsheets on improving your balance posture and strength. Or call our Fitline on Free Phone 1800 303545 to get ongoing telephone support to get some healthy activity into your routine.

Go for Life is an Age & Opportunity initiative, funded by the Irish Sports Council. It runs in partnership with the Health Service Executive Health Promotion Units and the Local Sports Partnerships.(Full list of partners)
